To address this gap, we embarked on the development of a Digital Arts Trail, offering a platform for youth to co-create, experiment, and contribute to the city’s cultural landscape.

From Co-Created Art to Augmented Reality

The project brought together young people from three distinct youth groups at The Way Youth Zone, Beats a Bar, and Urban Room 01902. Each group was tasked with designing a unique 2D artwork, which would later be transformed into immersive augmented reality (AR) pieces by a digital developer.

This process emphasised collaboration, creativity, and ownership, allowing young participants to take pride in seeing their original ideas evolve into cutting-edge digital art accessible to a wider audience.

The Workshop Journey

Each youth group participated in 4-6 workshops, facilitated by local artists, where they explored various art techniques and developed their creative visions. During these sessions:

  • Individual Contributions: Each young person focused on completing specific elements of the artwork, such as characters, patterns, or objects.

  • Collaborative Creation: These individual elements were combined to form a single cohesive 2D artwork, representing the group’s collective creativity and vision.

Professional Guidance and Skill Development

To ensure a high standard of artistic and technical achievement, local artists were paired with each youth group. These practicing professionals shared their expertise, introduced participants to new techniques, and guided them through the creative process. This mentorship enriched the young people’s learning experience and broadened their artistic horizons.

Vision Boards and Collaborative Creation

At the outset of each session, participants created vision boards—collages of images, themes, and ideas that visually articulated their artistic intentions. These boards served as the foundation for their work, keeping the creative process focused and inspired.

By engaging in this structured yet imaginative approach, the youth groups were able to contribute unique perspectives to the Digital Arts Trail, reflecting their diverse experiences and creativity.

A Cultural Legacy for Wolverhampton

This initiative not only addressed the immediate need for accessible cultural activities but also left a lasting impact by equipping young people with valuable skills and a sense of achievement. The completed Digital Arts Trail stands as a testament to the potential of Wolverhampton’s youth to innovate and enrich their city’s cultural identity.
