The musicians in the Live@the Marquee have all generously offered to perform for free to allow it to be a free event to encourage local people to attend. This is an opportunity to get back into watching bands, and to discover or re-discover Newhampton Arts Centre. The marquee is perfect for those who may have sensory needs as it will be light and airy and not enclosed. No stairs. No stress.
Kerry Worton is an advocate for up and coming music in the area and believes in making gigs accessible to all. She is in the process of creating the charity Wolves Music United, which will focus on mentoring young musicians and providing support with instruments, music lessons, gigs and recording sessions. The charity will support those with financial hardship, sensory needs and mental health issues as she feels music should have no barriers.
Kerry Worton is no stranger to the music industry and she continues to perform with her newly formed trio, who are also performing at the event. Her work as a session backing vocalist continues in recording studios and stage for other artists within the industry.
Kerry commented, ‘We have a wealth of music talent within the city, I have witnessed this first-hand by attending grassroot venues and the weekly open mic nights at the Newhampton pub, hosted by Plugged Inn Music Promotions, who are also putting musicians back into the music scene. The Live and Picking nights at the NAC, organised by Curtis Shelton, a volunteer who has been running this night for over 10years, demonstrates how young musicians need a platform to perform and be guided in the right direction. A lot of great things are happening with music from all ages in our area and we need to shout it from the rooftops by sharing gigs on social media and supporting promoters at grassroot venues by purchasing tickets in advance, where they are usually discounted for early bird sales. Otherwise we will be left with larger venues and arenas to watch live music, where only those with deeper pockets can attend. Also our next generation of musicians need that opportunity to perform live on stage and learn this beautiful art of performing to an audience otherwise they will just have to rely solely on the digital platform. When musicians get together we are all on that same equal platform and in my experience no one cares about age, gender, race and what shoes you wear !! We need to continue to keep music universal and to smash down any barriers that start to arise.
The musicians who are performing know each other and they provide a real support network on and off stage, I have seen how they support new musicians standing on stage for the first time or returning after a long period away. This is what Wolves Music United is all about and the ethos for #LoveTheReans festival, which I hope will become an annual event’.
Kerry Worton will be on Black Country Radio talking about the event, with one of the musicians, Timothy Parkes, who will be performing live for the music takeover on Sunday 25th August, 2- 4pm.
Put Friday 6th September in your diary for Live@themarquee music event !!!
