Cycling Film Night: ‘A Sunday in Hell’ – introduced by William Fotheringham
The Guardian’s William Fotheringham joins us to introduce a rare screening of the classic sports documentary ‘A Sunday in Hell’, an immersive look at Paris-Roubaix, cycling’s toughest one-day race.
‘A Sunday in Hell’ is widely regarded as one of the greatest sports films of all time: Danish director Jorgen Leth’s revolutionary film-making techniques capture the unique atmosphere of the race, as riders led by Eddy Merckx take on the gruelling, cobble-strewn course on a hot, dusty day in 1976
William Fotheringham is the author of a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film and, at the NAC, will tell us some of the inside story of the film and the race; there will be an audience Q&A after the screening.
We will be showing the slightly longer Danish version of this cycling film, with subtitles. This version is 1 hour 50 – we will have a short interval halfway through.
